One of our unique systems is a two-type technician certification system, -a combination of the national certification system and our own in-house certification system. When we introduced the Toyota production system, we actually recognized the need for technicians with varied skills who could carry out many different kinds of jobs. We felt that this was especially important for SUZUTAMI, and organized committee to prepare a manual for especially for newly employed workers. Certification tests have been conducted once every year to improve the techniques of our employees and encourage them to acquire multiple capabilities. As of the end of 1996, 49 employees (approximately 30% of our entire workforce) were certified as multi-skilled technicians in five different departments (Quality Management, Mechanical Pressing Milling, and Surface Grinding.) In addition, 42 employees (approximately 28% of our workforce) have acquired the National Technical Certification.
